Greenway, F. L. (2015). Physiological adaptations to weight loss and factors favouring weight regain. International Journal of Obesity, 39(8), 1188–1196.
Since obesity is a major global health problem, especially for the United States, I chose this study to examine the physiological effects of losing, gaining, and regaining weight. This study examines the physiological response to weight loss, which often leads to weight regain. Body weight has many contributors such as homeostasis, hormone levels, environmental and behavioral factors. In regards to homeostasis, the hypothalamus has a central role in integrating signals regarding food intake, such as telling your body when you are full. While environmental and behavioral factors include what you choose to eat and how you exercise. Interestingly enough physiological adaptations to weight loss favor weight regain due to circulating appetite-related hormones, energy homeostasis, subjective appetite and nutrient metabolism. So in order to maintain weight loss you must change your physiological response by your behavior.
